SBZ & WDL

We have been working closely with the SBZ Corporation recently in order to market their microsites which we are currently developing. We were asked to come up with a logo concept that could run across all avenues of the SBZ Corporation in order to keep a consistent look. This logo concept had to run across all the microsites, and all relevant marketing material, so a simple execution was always going to be the most effective.

We will update our showcase, to include the recent SBZ work, once we have completed all of the projects.

We Thank You Fedrigoni

We received this rather nice package from Fedrigoni (who are a paper merchant) in the post this morning. It is Fedrigoni’s latest paper promotion designed by Design Project. It contains an A2 poster showcasing the different coloured boxes and relevant information and also two colour boxes, which I had fun folding together. The attention that has been put into this promotion is reminiscent of the GF Smith print promotions. Thanks Fedrigoni.

link rel=canonical

At WDL we’re loving Googles link rel=canonical at the moment. It’s long been a problem with Google (and any other search engine) that a single page on a website can be seen as many separate pages:

http://www.websitedesign.co.uk
http://www.websitedesign.co.uk/index.php
http://websitedesign.co.uk
http://websitedesign.co.uk/index.php

and so on will all resolve to a single page, yet Google will see each as an individual resource. This can be a problem for a number of reasons. First is that Google will make an arbirtary decision about which one of these will be the ‘main’ page for it’s index which may not agree with your choice, and second, that the power of your incoming links can be dissipated if sites linking to use use different URL’s.

Google has addressed this problem by asking webmasters to add this tag to the head section their pages:

This link tells Google that http://www.websitedesign.co.uk should be considered the ‘main’ URL for all of the URL’s that resolve to the home page of our site. Now, with the canonical link in place, all the links that point to our home page will boost the link popularity for the single URL http://www.websitedesign.co.uk.

For full information about canonical, check ou this page on Google Webmaster Help.

WDL Get Snappy

We will soon be sending out a promotional folio of our printed work to show current clients what we can do for them in print. The folio shows a selection of projects that cover a range of print work from stationery to illustrative art-work. We have been taking lots of photographs for the folio with our fantastic set-up.

WDL Branding

Rob is the new addition to the WDL team as our print designer and as WDL are looking at developing the print aspect to the business this was perfect timing. This does not mean we are moving away from web design but simply branching out in order to offer more to our clients.

Since Robs arrival he has been working hard on redesigning the WDL  identity. Our new branding is now finished which includes a logo, business cards, letter heads, envelopes and compliment slips. We’re all very pleased with our new ‘look’ and the website will soon be following, so check back soon.

Cheeky Directories

It always amazes me that startup directories want to charge me to advertise on their sites. We were cold called this morning by www.bview.co.uk – and while I like their concept – an advertising directory with user / customer feedback – I can’t see how they can ask me for £160 per year to advertise on a site that has virtually no traffic. Surely a better tactic for them is to offer free listings to get some decent content onto their site, and then charge once they’ve got some traffic?

Just take a look at how their traffic compares with www.yell.com

OK – so Alexa isn’t perfect, and it’s probably massively skewed data – but the contrast is striking. For a sponsored listing with Yell I pay about twice as much as bview are asking for – but in comparison it’s a bargain. What’s more, bview will apparently only display my ad within 30km of our office. How can that make sense?

Oh, and the real killer of the call? As a special deal I can have 2 years of advertising for £360 - that’s right, more than twice the price of one year!

Where do these people get my number??? Probably from Yell!
